Wānaka destination wedding guide: travel, guests and timing

Your guests are making a real journey. Planning around that, rather than around the ceremony alone, is what makes a destination wedding work.

Short answer

Pick the arrival airport first, ask guests for at least three nights, send travel details months ahead, and start the licence process early, it can be done from overseas.

How to plan it

Six things guests will thank you for

  1. 01

Choose the arrival route before the date

Most guests arrive through Queenstown, with Christchurch and Dunedin as alternatives. The route shapes the drive, the cost and how many days people need to take off.
  2. 02

Ask guests for three nights, not one

A single night means everyone arrives tired and leaves in a hurry. Three gives room for delayed flights, a rest day and the part people remember, time with you.
  3. 03

    Send travel information absurdly early

Airport, drive time, whether a rental car is needed, warm layers, and the dress guidance for standing on grass or gravel. Early information prevents most wedding-week problems.
  4. 04

Handle the licence from where you are

You can begin the New Zealand licence process from overseas. Check the current requirements on the official source and allow more time than the minimum.
  5. 05

    Hold accommodation in a block

Peak-season beds in Wānaka go early. Reserve a group of rooms you can release rather than hoping guests book independently in time.
  6. 06

Plan one gathering besides the wedding

A welcome drink or a morning-after breakfast. It is the cheapest way to make a long trip feel worth it for the people who made it.

What couples fly here for

If you are planning from overseas and cannot visit first, film is the honest preview: the distances between sites, the scale of the country, and what a day built around flying really costs you in time.
