Cost

What a Wānaka wedding costs

A from–to calculator rather than a single average, with helicopter flights priced as they are actually published, departing Wānaka Airport.

Short answer

Most couples marrying in Wānaka land somewhere between NZ$4,000 and NZ$12,000 for a ground-based day. Add a private helicopter and a mountain-top ceremony and the range moves to roughly NZ$9,000 to NZ$20,000.

Both statements are true, and neither means much until you know which lines you want. So build your own range below. All figures are estimates only, in New Zealand dollars.

Helicopter prices are the operator’s own published wedding rates from Wānaka Airport, per aircraft. Every other line is a planning band that moves with your date, guest list and access.

Wānaka wedding cost calculator

Tick the elements you actually want. Each line shows its own from–to band, and the total stays a range, because that is the honest shape of this answer. Helicopter flights use Wanaka Helicopters’ published wedding prices from Wānaka Airport; everything else is an indicative Wānaka planning range, not a quote.

Loading the interactive version. The guidance below applies either way.

What this assumes

  • All figures are in New Zealand dollars and include GST where the supplier publishes it that way.
  • Helicopter prices are per aircraft, not per person, and are the operator's own published figures.
  • Per-guest lines are multiplied by the guest number you enter, including the two of you.
  • Non-flight ranges are editorially maintained planning bands for the Wānaka basin, reviewed 23 August 2026.
  • Nothing you enter leaves your browser.

Estimates only. This calculator produces a planning range, not a quotation. Supplier, helicopter, venue and seasonal prices change without notice, and your date, guest list and site access will move the total. Always work from written quotes.

Three real shapes

What couples here tend to spend

Three ways a Wānaka day is usually put together, each with its own honest band.

01

The two of you, lakeside

NZ$4,000 – NZ$7,000

Celebrant, licence, half-day photography, a bouquet, hair and makeup, and a table for two afterwards. Drive-up ceremony site, no styling.

02

Small group, elevated site

NZ$7,000 – NZ$13,000

Add coordination, a private transfer, a reserve permit, a larger floral moment and full-day coverage for eight to twelve people.

03

Helicopter ceremony

NZ$9,000 – NZ$20,000+

As above with a published flight from Wānaka Airport and a mountain landing for two to six, plus the contingency to move the day if the tops are closed in.

What moves the number

Five variables, in order of impact

Guest count, access, season, hours and contingency. In that order, they explain almost every difference between two Wānaka budgets.

Mt Alta, Wānaka. Photograph: Wonder Weddings.

How you reach the ceremony

The single largest variable

A lakeside site ten minutes from town costs nothing to reach. A glacier landing can cost more than the rest of the day combined. Decide access first, because everything else scales around it.

Guest count

Non-linear

Two to six people is minor on the ground and significant in the air, because it changes the aircraft. Beyond about twenty, transfers, seating and catering start behaving like a full wedding.

Date and season

20–40% swing

Late December through February carries peak pricing on accommodation and the tightest availability. May, June and September are materially cheaper for the same suppliers.

Coverage hours

Direct multiplier

A two-hour ceremony-and-portraits package and a full-day documentary record are different products. Decide what you want to remember before comparing photographers on price.

Weather contingency

Often overlooked

Holding a second date, a backup site or an unused deposit is a real cost. In an alpine basin, budgeting for it is cheaper than being forced into a bad choice on the morning.

How it breaks down

Which costs scale, and which do not

Some lines move with every guest you add. Others are set by the date, the aircraft or the hours booked.

How each part of a Wānaka wedding budget behaves as your guest list grows.
 BehaviourWhat that means for you
Catering and beverageScales per guestThe single biggest lever you control. Ten fewer guests changes the total more than any supplier negotiation.
HelicopterScales by aircraftTwo to three people fit an R44. Beyond that you move to a Squirrel or EC130 and the flight price steps up, not the per-head cost.
TransportScales in stepsOne vehicle covers a range, then you need another. Remote sites and late finishes both add trips.
Venue or site hireMostly fixedUsually set by date and exclusivity rather than headcount, though minimum spends can be tied to numbers.
Photography, film, celebrant, planningFixed, by hoursDriven by coverage length and travel, not guest numbers.
ContingencyA percentage of everythingWeather here has a cost. Hold a real contingency rather than a hopeful one.

The aircraft is the clearest example of a stepped cost. Two of you fit an R44 and the price is the price; add a photographer, a celebrant or a witness and you are into a larger machine, with the flight figure stepping up rather than the per-head one.
